Police catch 779 speeding Scots in three days

NEARLY 800 drivers have been caught speeding in a three-day crackdown, the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (Acpos) said today.

Police patrols and speed cameras clocked 779 people for breaking the limit, with 15 drivers reported to the fiscal for dangerous driving.

Those caught included a 29-year-old man caught doing 50mph in a 20mph zone in Rosyth in Fife.

A motorcyclist was snapped by a speed camera at 90mph in a 60mph zone on the A1 near Cockburnspath in East Lothian.

The campaign, which ended yesterday, targeted country roads because they are where seven in ten road deaths occur.

Deputy Chief Constable Tom Ewing, who is in charge of road policing for Acpos, said: “These figures are frankly unacceptable and we must work together with our partners and law-abiding road users to reduce this behaviour on our roads.

“As the incidents recorded by officers across the country indicate, there are drivers who show contempt for the law and for their fellow road users.

“There are still far too many road users speeding and not driving safely and we will continue to police our roads robustly to ensure the public are protected.”
