New Forth Road Bridge starts to take shape

Theses new images taken of the replacement crossing show the bridge starting to take shape. Work began in September 2011 at the southern end of the M90.

The new Forth Road Bridge will join the road network at Ferrytoll on the Fife shore, where the existing Ferrytoll Intersection will be redesigned to form the junction between the approaches to both bridges.

The groundworks for the northern approach to the bridge lead down to the north shore of the Firth of Forth, with the caissons which will be used to form the foundations for the bridge supports and main towers extending across the Firth of Forth.

A schools competition was launched earlier this year as part of Transport Scotland’s campaign to find a permanent name for the new bridge. The winning bridge name will be announced this summer.

The bridge is due to be complete by 2016.
