The 24 year-old woman, from Aberdeen, was travelling on the 9.40pm Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen service when she was attacked.

A force spokesman said: “As she walked through the carriage a man – described as being in his 60s – punched her knee for no apparent reason.

“The man responsible, who was about 5ft 6ins in height and wearing a blue baseball cap, a grey jacket and trousers and white training shoes, alighted from the train at Montrose station around 11.20pm.

“He was also carrying a blue holdall.”

Constable Ashley Forbes of British Transport Police is appealing for anyone who recognises the description of the man responsible to come forward.

He said: “There appears to be no explanation for this unwarranted assault and I am anxious to speak with anyone who can help our enquiry by providing information which can help identify the suspect.”
