Man dies after M74 accident

A MAN hit by a tanker after he got out of his lorry on a motorway has been named by police.

John McQuade, 47, was adjusting straps on his vehicle on the hard shoulder when he was hit by the passing tanker.

Police said the accident happened at around 7am on Wednesday on the M74 near Hamilton, South Lanarkshire.

Mr McQuade, from Livingston, died a short time later at Wishaw General Hospital. The 43-year-old tanker driver was not hurt.

Strathclyde Police are sending a report to the procurator fiscal.

The carriageway between junctions six and seven was closed for almost five hours after the accident.
