Police Scotland said the man died after opening the rear door of the bus in Gorbals Street, near Victoria Bridge, when the driver refused to let him off because of surrounding traffic.

A spokeswoman said he had suffered serious head injuries in the incident around 12:25am and died at the scene.

She said: “The man got on the bus in Stockwell Street in the city centre. As it approached Victoria Bridge, he tried to get off but could not because of traffic in the area.

“He made his way to the rear of the bus while it was moving and opened the emergency exit on the lower level and jumped out.”

The spokeswoman said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances. A post mortem will be held and a report sent to the procurator fiscal.

A spokesman for First Glasgow said: “We can confirm an incident took place involving one of our Service 5 buses at Victoria Bridge at around 12:25 this morning.

“Unfortunately, an individual exited one of our buses, whilst it was still moving, via the emergency exit.

“We continue to assist the police with their enquiries, but at this stage our thoughts are very much with the victim’s family and friends.”
