Man dies after boat capsizes

A MAN died yesterday after getting trapped inside a capsized cabin cruiser.

Clyde Coastguard was called to the incident off Greenock Ocean Terminal, close to the town’s Esplanade, in Inverclyde, just before noon.

Three men, aged 42, 47 and 61, from the Dumbarton area, were on board the boat when it capsized.

The 47-year-old was rescued by divers who could hear him inside the vessel, but he later died at Inverclyde Royal Infirmary.

A Coastguard spokesman said one of the men was pulled to the shore by a member of the public, while another was rescued by a lifeboat from Helensburgh RNLI.

Graeme Watters, watch manager at Clyde Coastguard, said: “One person made it to the shore with assistance and the other two were recovered and then put into the care of the waiting ambulance.

“They have been taken to Inverclyde Royal Infirmary.

“We have been informed that one of the three men has sadly lost his life.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this tragic time.”

It is not yet known why the small vessel capsized, and inquiries are continuing.
