Nationalist MP, Natalie McGarry, wrote on Twitter: “Massive plume of smoke and flames visible from M80 over North East area of Glasgow, hard to see through smoke. Hope all ok.”

Another witness added: “Black smoke coming from Stobhill Hospital. I can smell it from here.”

A spokeswoman from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the fire is “still ongoing” and that crews are working to bring it under control.

She added: “On arrival the Incident Commander quickly assessed the situation and deployed his crews to tackle the fire with water hoses and carry out a search of the building for any persons who may still be within.

“At present the fire is still ongoing with the crews working extremely hard to tackle the blaze and bring it under control. The cause of the fire is yet unknown and Police Scotland are working to minimise the impact of the fire on the local road network.”

There are no immediate reports of injury.
