M8 crash: Scottish motorway closed following serious accident near West Lothian town

Parts of a busy main road in Scotland has closed due to a serious accident.

The crash happened at about 4am on the M8 between J 4a and J 5, near Whitburn, West Lothian, on Friday 2 October.

Delays in the area are expected to last up to 95 minutes east bound with queues stretching back to Newhouse, and there is about a 15 minute delay for traffic travelling westbound.

Emergency services are still on the scene dealing with the ongoing incident.

Traffic watchdog Traffic Scotland alerted motorists in the area to the accident.

In a message on Twitter a spokesman said: “Emergency services are on the scene.

“The road is likely to remain closed for some time.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers are currently in attendance on the M8 near to junction 5 at Shotts following a road traffic incident. Police were called to the scene at 4.05am on Friday, 2 October.

“The road is currently closed in both directions between junction 4 and junction 5.

“Emergency services remain at the scene and drivers are asked to avoid the area, where possible.

A second crash near J6a is also causing delays to traffic in the area.
