Lasers shone at planes landing in Glasgow Airport

Police have launched an investigation after lasers were shone at aircraft landing at a busy airport.

Officers said the “dangerous, reckless” practice could have distracted pilots and they are searching for those responsible.

Laser lights were beamed onto nine planes descending into Glasgow Airport between 6pm and 10pm last night.

In some cases, the lasers were shone into the eyes of the pilots.

It is believed the lights came from the Duntocher, Drumchapel or Knightswood areas.

Inspector Bob Smith said: “All the incidents happened as the aircraft were on their final decent into the airport. The laser was shone into the eyes of the pilots which could not only have distracted them but could have caused serious injury.

“An aircraft on its final decent is the most crucial time for the pilot who obviously needs to be in full control of the aircraft.

“All these planes were carrying passengers. Thankfully this time no-one came to any harm but doing this is extremely dangerous, not to mention stupid and reckless.

“It is an offence under the Air Navigation Order 2009 Article 222 to do this and if caught, you could get a custodial sentence.”
