L-driver is cleared over fatal crash

A LEARNER driver whose girlfriend died in a crash when he lost control of his sports car has been cleared of causing her death.

A jury took less than an hour to find a charge of causing death by careless driving and going at excessive speed not proven against student Euan Tennant, 22, after a five-day trial at Perth Sheriff Court.

Abertay University student Laura Campbell, 22, died when Mr Tennant lost control of his 21-year-old Toyota MR2 sports car on a bend and crashed into an oncoming Ford Explorer 4x4, driven by architect William Normand, who had no chance to avoid the high-speed collision.

The court heard that Mr Tennant, of York Place, Edinburgh, was able to walk from the wreckage but firefighters had to cut Miss Campbell free as she was trapped in the passenger seat.

Mr Tennant, who had denied causing his girlfriend’s death by driving carelessly and too fast, told how he regularly experienced “flashbacks” to the fatal accident on the A93 north of Perth.

The jury found it not proven that he caused her death by driving carelessly and at excessive speed in Perth, and on the A93 Perth to Blairgowrie road near Scone on 22 September 2010.
