Key workers thank ScotRail passengers in novel station announcements

Key workers are to thank people for keeping ScotRail trains clear for them in innovative announcements to be broadcast at stations.

The messages from a nurse, doctor and joiner will be played to encourage other passengers to travel at quiet times because of the sharply reduced capacity on trains.

They are among 16 essential workers whose recordings will be heard at stations across Britain.

Glasgow-based Hannah Sperry’s message says: “Hi, I’m Hannah, and I’m a nurse in a care home.

Dundee Station.

“Thank you for only using the railway if you need to, so I can get to work and care for others.”

Similar recordings have been made by Connor, a construction industry joiner from North Berwick, and Ross, a doctor.

Ms Sperry, who is from Sussex, said: “Travelling by train during the pandemic has been very unusual, with thankfully very few people around, helping to protect me and make my life easier, particularly after a 12-hour shift.”

Trains will only be able to accommodate about 20 per cent of normal passenger numbers because of distancing requirements.

Alex Hynes, managing director of Scotland’s Railway, which comprises ScotRail and Network Rail Scotland, said: “We’re urging everyone to follow our guidelines for safer travel, wear a face covering, and to keep travel to essential journeys only.

“I’m thrilled to have Hannah and other key workers on board to help spread that message.

“I’d like to thank our customers who have played their part so far by staying home, and by only travelling if when it’s been absolutely necessary.

“This has helped to allow key workers like Hannah to maintain a safe physical distance on our trains while they carry out their essential work.”
