Glasgow station war memorial’s Union flag damaged

A UNION flag on the war memorial at Glasgow Central station was vandalised hours after the annual Armistice Day service this month, British Transport Police revealed today.

The force has issued a CCTV image of a man it wants to trace over the incident at Scotland’s busiest station, in which the flag was taken from its mount and broken.

It is understood that a Saltire which was also on the bronze memorial, near the main entrance, was left untouched.

The incident happened at 1pm on 11 November, two hours after the service and two-minute silence, which included the unveiling of a new memorial stone to commemorate railway workers killed in the Second World War.

Detective Constable Derek Jackson said: “I am appealing to anyone who recognises the man in the photograph to contact me as a matter of urgency.”

BTP said it believed the man may have information which may be able to assist with their inquiries.

David Simpson, Scotland route managing director for Network Rail, which runs the station, said: “We are very proud to have the new memorial in the station. It provides an understated, yet poignant, reminder of the sacrifices our predecessors in the railway industry have made and shows that they will always be remembered.”
