Glasgow 2014: Traffic information provided on time

THE Freight Transport Association (FTA), which issued an ultimatum to Commonwealth Games organisers over disruption to deliveries during the event, said today it was now “optimistic” that traffic information would be provided in time.

It said details were finally being provided by the organisers following months of requests.

The body had warned in March that preparations for freight deliveries were far behind those made ahead of the London Olympics two years ago,

It demanded the information be provided in time to be passed on to lorry firms at a special games conference it is holding next week.

Details include the games route network, which includes lanes reserved for official vehicles, affected postcodes, and parking restrictions around venues.

Chris MacRae, the FTA’s head of policy - Scotland, said: “We are pleased to see that after months of pushing for details we are now getting the information we have been asking for.

“The freight and logistics industry needs to plan ahead of such events to help ensure continuity of deliveries, servicing to existing customers and to prepare for the additional freight requirements that the Games will bring.

“We are relieved to know that the games route network and affected postcodes have now been published, that the local area traffic management and parking plans have become available and the delivering to venues guide has been published.

“The freight and logistics industry will play a huge part in helping to deliver essential food, drink and supplies, not only to the Games venues themselves but also to the residents and businesses of the city

“In order to do so, it has been vital for freight and logistics operators to prepare well ahead.”
