Girl killed in tenement plunge was mourning death of her big sister

The family of a teenage girl
who died when she fell from a building said they have been “blown apart” by the loss of two children in just over a year.

Kayleigh Scott, 15, from Tarbolton in Ayrshire, was rushed to hospital after falling from a rooftop in Ayr at 11:40pm on Wednesday, but was pronounced dead when she got there. Her family said they were still coping with the death of her elder sister Nicola, who died in June last year.

In a statement released through Strathclyde Police, her mother, who has not been named, said: “Myself and my family are absolutely devastated by the loss of my beautiful daughter Kayleigh. We are still trying to come to terms with Nicola’s death just over a year ago, but this has blown us apart.

“Kayleigh was a beautiful, vivacious and loving young lady – she will be sorely missed by all.”

A police spokeswoman said an investigation was under way into the circumstances
surrounding the girl’s death.

Alan Moir, headmaster of Belmont Academy, where Kayleigh was a pupil, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time. Due to the summer holidays, it’s not possible to bring everyone together as we would normally do in such tragic circumstances, but we’re doing everything we can to contact friends from the school to offer them support, someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on.

“We’re a very close school community in Belmont and, in time, we’ll consider how we want to remember her as a part of our school community, but today our focus is on those
affected by this tragic news.”

In a separate incident, a woman fell to her death from a multi-storey block of flats in the Lochree area of Dundee on Thursday night.

Jennifer Findlay, 46, of Elders Court, Dundee, was pronounced dead at the scene after police officers and paramedics were called to the block. She had fallen from the fifth floor.

A spokesman for Tayside Police said a man had been arrested and her death was being treated as unexplained.

He said: “Emergency services were called to the area at about 8:30pm on Thursday after the woman was reported to have fallen to the ground below. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Tayside Police can confirm that a 44-year-old man is currently detained and is assisting officers with their investigation into the full set of circumstances surrounding the incident.”
