Fresh call to upgrade A1 to dual carriageway status

THE main road between East Lothian and the Border should be widened to become a dual carriageway, councillors have said.

In its response to the Scottish Government’s national planning consultation, East Lothian Council called for the A1 trunk road to be upgraded.

The local authority also wants to see major improvements to the city bypass.

The government’s transport blueprint is aiming to improve cross-Border travel on the road and railways by making more areas of Scotland no more than three hours’ travel from major English cities.

Councillor Michael Veitch, East Lothian’s transport spokesman, said: “While
supporting the general principles of the Government’s plan, we are particularly keen that East Lothian benefits from future investment in upgrading and improving transport links as this will be vital in competing economically with other areas of the country.

“To achieve this, we are pressing for the dualling of the rest of the Scottish section of the A1 trunk road from Dunbar to the Border to improve connectivity and the flow of traffic.”
