FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a fire at a derelict church near Peterhead.

More than 20 firefighters attended the scene at the former West Church in Hatton at around 7.30 this morning.

The fire brigade and Police Scotland were unable to confirm a anything this morning but said their was no evidence to suggest anyone was inside at the time or that anybody had been hurt.

The church has been empty for seven years and was put up for sale by the Church of Scotland in 2012 for offers around £160,000.

It was built in 1884 by Rupert Murdoch’s grandparents.

An SFRS spokesman said: “We received the call at 7.30am and sent two fire engines. At 7.50am we sent another two and a height vehicle.

“They used one hose-reel jet to extinguish the fire in the single-storey derelict building.”
