“One firefighter was taken to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for a precautionary check on his ears after a car near him exploded as he was fighting the fire,” she said. “He was not injured and was returned to the scene.”

The spokeswoman said between 70 and 80 firefighters are tackling the blaze, including a height appliance and an emergency support vehicle.

Meanwhile, the service tackled another large blaze which started in an outbuilding next to Rossend Castle in Burntisland, also in Fife, at around 8pm last night.

About 50 firefighters were called to the blaze, where the outbuilding’s roof had collapsed.
