Family of cyclist killed in city launch road campaign

The stepmother of a cyclist killed last week in an incident on an Edinburgh street has spoken out about her plans to transform cycle safety in the city.

Lynne McNicoll, a fundraiser for a children’s cancer charity, told The Scotsman that she and husband Ian are “determined” to ensure Andrew McNicoll’s death was “not in vain”.

The 43-year-old collided with a parked vehicle on Lanark Road last Thursday and died of his injuries at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Police are investigating whether he hit the car after being overtaken by an HGV lorry.

In the days following his death, the McNicoll family has set up the website Andrew Cyclist.com to begin raising funds for an awareness campaign for Scottish cyclists.

Mrs McNicoll plans to tackle issues such as speed limits and parking on traffic islands in any future campaign, though her family is determined to “do it right” and will take advice from experts as the campaign gathers pace.

Mrs McNicoll said: “The first issue for me was always the fact that buses and cycles share the same lane – it’s not like the old days when you learned to cycle, things have to move forward”.

She added: “We’re determined Andrew’s life was not in vain – we’ve been galvanised into action.”
