It intends to purchase either the Nissan Leaf or the new Toyota Prius Plug-In, a hybrid whose diesel engine only kicks in when it runs out of charge – about 5 per cent of the time.

The only existing car club with electric vehicles is in London, the EV Club.

The City Car Club wants to introduce electric cars to its other clubs across Britain, which includes Glasgow.

Vicky Shipway, a spokeswoman for the Edinburgh club, said: “We are working with Edinburgh City Council, which provides the club’s parking spaces, to add an electric vehicle next year.

“However, charging points are a problem because the technology is changing so fast, so we will need to future-proof it.”
