Acpos said a total of 229 drivers were reported for drink driving during the two-week campaign, which ended yesterday - nine fewer than last year.

They included 118 over the last week, along with five detected whilst unfit through drugs.

In, addition 18 vehicles were seized and may be crushed or sold under a pioneering Scottish scheme which covers first-time offenders more than three times over the limit, repeat offenders and drug drivers.

Deputy Chief Constable Kate Thomson, of Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary, and in charge of road casualty reduction for Acpos, said: “Of course it is pleasing to note there has been a reduction in numbers of motorists found to be driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. But this is a very slight decrease year on year and I would caution against any form of complacency.”
