Driver survives 75ft plunge

A YOUNG driver had a lucky escape after he was left trapped in a car which plunged 75ft down an embankment and came to rest feet from Loch Ness.

The near-tragedy happened after his Vauxhall Corsa and a Volkswagen Golf collided on the A82 Inverness to Fort William road, just north of Invermoriston, at about 8:25am yesterday.

The 19-year-old man was trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut free by firefighters.

One witness, who lives in Invermoriston, said: “If he had ended up in the water it would have been a different story. The loch at that point is so deep the car would have sunk with the poor boy trapped inside.”

The driver was flown by air ambulance to Raigmore Hospital, in Inverness, with suspected neck and head injuries.

A 46-year-old man and 43-year-old woman, who were travelling in the other car, suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance.
