Driver killed in crash near Lonmay is named

THE driver who was killed on Tuesday night when his sports car was involved in a horrific crash at a notorious North east accident blackspot has been named as Peter McKenzie, 42, who was from the Fraserburgh area.

He died when his silver Mercedes SLK collided with a blue Peugeot 307 on the A90 Aberdeen to Fraserburgh road.

The two cars collided on a sharp bend on the busy trunk road near the village of Lonmay. The 52 year-old driver of the Peugeot was seriously injured and taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Two appliances from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, based at Fraserburgh, were called to the scene of the collision shortly after 6pm last night. David Rout, the incident commander for the SFRS at the scene, said: “The professionalism demonstrated by our crews in working with emergency response doctors was exemplary. Despite everyone’s best efforts the man passed away and our thoughts are with his family.”

Sergeant David Pirie, from the Aberdeenshire and Moray Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts at this difficult time are with the family and friends of Peter McKenzie.

“The investigation into the circumstances of the collision is at an early stage and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the cars before the incident to get in touch with us by calling Police Scotland on 101.”
