Driver charged after dashcam captures A9 near-miss

Fruit and veg merchant Jim McLaughlin posted dashcam footage of the close shave after the incident on Monday at Tomich Junction near Invergordon on the A9 in Easter Ross.

In the video, everything seems fine until Mr McLaughlin’s Mercedes van is just seconds away from the junction.

Suddenly a large, red timber lorry can be seen pulling out.

Mr McLaughlin, a 52 year-old father-of-two, takes evasive action by pulling onto to the verge and braking to a standstill.

He said later: “I thought I was dust.”

By midday today the footage had already been viewed nearly 200,000 times.

A spokesman for Police Scotland’s Highlands and Islands Division said today: “Police can confirm that following enquiries into video footage of a lorry on the A9 at the Tomich junction, near Invergordon, a 43 year-old man has been reported to the procurator fiscal for road traffic offences.

“Police would like to remind road users to be vigilant when driving, especially when approaching or negotiating busy junctions.”

Mr McLaughlin, of Inverness who has recently enrolled on an advanced driving course, was commuting to work at his company, Munro’s Fruit Merchants in Tain, Ross-shire, when the incident occurred.
