Coffee-powered car sets new Guiness World Record

The driver of a coffee-powered car set a new world speed record yesterday.

Conservationist Martin Bacon, 42, got his specially modified Ford P100 pick-up truck to go more than 65mph.

Watched by his wife Jill, Mr Bacon, a father of two from Teesdale, completed his run at Woodford Airfield in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

The vehicle uses coffee chaff pellets – the waste product from coffee production – which are heated in a charcoal fire where they break down into carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

The gas is cooled and filtered, before hydrogen is combusted to drive the engine.
