Cap rip-off motorway service fuel, says RAC

DRIVERS believe fuel prices at motorway service areas should be capped because they feel ripped off, the RAC said today.

The motoring group said it had found petrol and diesel prices at such service stations last month were up to 10p a litre higher than at nearby forecourts.

Examples included petrol at 133.9p at Stirling services on the M9 and M80 compared to 123.9p at a Jet filling station less than a mile away. Diesel was also 10p more dearer, at 137.9p,

The RAC said nearly three in four of the 1,463 motorists it polled reckoned motorway prices were “very expensive” with one in four refusing to buy fuel at motorway stops.

Nearly two in three drivers said prices should be capped so fuel was no more expensive than at non-motorway forecourts.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “It’s no wonder that motorists feel held to ransom with prices on the motorways inflated to such an extent.

“We can see no reason why motorway fuel should be so much more expensive. In fact, arguably it is much easier from a delivery point of view than it is getting fuel to urban filling stations.”
