Bravery award for man who helped stop Glasgow Subway train from hitting pensioner

A PASSENGER who helped stop a Glasgow Subway train yards from an elderly man who had fallen onto the track will receive a bravery award from British Transport Police tonight.

Tim Flatman, who was waiting on the platform at Shields Road station, ran to the tunnel mouth where he “waved his arms furiously” at the driver of the approaching train, British Transport Police said.

Mr Flatman, from Rhu in Argyll, had initially tried to help the 88-year-old man when he heard the train coming.

He will receive a commendation at a ceremony at Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow along with station staff Douglas McConnell and Alan Clark, who switched off power to the tracks and went to the injured man’s aid.

The man, who suffered head injuries in the incident on Friday, 13 January, made a full recovery.

Among nearly 100 others who will also receive awards from Assistant Chief Constable (Scotland) David McCall is a Subway driver, David Cunningham, who removed a suspect package from a train. A 39-year-old man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection the incident.
