Apache helicopter forced to land in Aberdeen field

AN Army Apache helicopter has been forced to make a controlled landing in a field.

The attack helicopter, which had been taking part in a training exercise, landed in Milltimber near Aberdeen at around 12pm today.

The aircraft suffered “possible mechanical failure”, an Army spokeswoman said.

“Army Air Corps engineers are on their way to recover the helicopter and there will be an investigation,” she said.

Both crew members on board were uninjured.

The Apache was taking part in Nato’s Operation Joint Warrior training exercise and was flying to the airfield at Kinloss Barracks in Moray from West Freugh near Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway.

Troops from 16 Air Assault Brigade were carrying out an aviation assault to capture the airfield as part of the exercise.
