Tragic crash hero named

A MAN killed as he tried to help an elderly crash victim was today named as a 47-year-old from Bathgate.

Thomas Rarity was struck by a van as he assisted a female driver involved in a collision with another vehicle. He died at the scene.

A second man, 39, was also struck in the incident and remains in a critical condition in a Glasgow hospital. The elderly driver remains in a stable condition in Paisley's Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The two men, driving different vehicles, had gone to the aid of a 71-year-old woman after seeing her car collide with another vehicle on the A737 in Linwood.

Police today repeated their appeal for any witnesses to the collision, which happened shortly before 8.30pm on Sunday.
