Traditional crimes on police radar

POLICE are targeting crimes that traditionally increase over the Christmas period with extra patrols at licensed premises and shops.

Operation Equinox will run until Thursday, January 6 in East Lothian and Midlothian, when an increase in alcohol-related crimes is typically reported.

High-visibility patrols will be deployed throughout the counties to monitor pubs, clubs and other licensed premises.

Officers will be on the lookout for anyone causing a disturbance within these venues and will carry out ID checks on anyone who appears to be under the age of 25.

An increased police presence will be on patrol in areas with retail stores and other business premises to offer crime prevention advice and deter thieves from operating over the holidays.

Chief Superintendent Mark Williams, divisional commander for East and Midlothian, said: “The activity being undertaken during Operation Equinox is in addition to our core policing responsibilities.

“There will be additional officers in place to undertake this dedicated activity.”
