Tough tests for racers carrying ropes and axes

SCOTLAND’S Skimo races will last 60-90 minutes, shorter than the epic European events.

The races are planned over a set course taking into account the terrain at specific resorts.

Competitors all start at the same time and race each other to a first-past-the-post finish.

Categories are: male, female and, if appropriate, team.

There are different types of courses ranging from vertical sprints – where racers “skin” uphill, using skins on their skis for traction, over a set distance – to courses that have short, steep sections which require racers
to put their skis in their backpacks.

All races involve technical downhill sections.

The races in Scotland will follow the format and the regulations of the International Ski Mountaineering Federation as closely as possible.

Racers will be supplied
with an equipment list which must be carried over the distance.

This includes skins to attach to the bottom of skis for going uphill, crampons, ice-axes, ropes and a harness.
