Toddler critical after crash

A 16-month-old child is in a critical condition in a Glasgow hospital after being badly injured in a crash in Dumfries and Galloway.

The crash, involving a silver Renault Clio and a Landrover Discovery, happened on the A75 Gretna to Stranraer road near Annan.

The baby was rushed to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in a critical condition and later transferred 80 miles north to Yorkhill Hospital at Glasgow for specialist treatment.

No other person in the crash is believed to have been seriously injured.

The accident happened as police warned motorists to drive with care on icy roads across the South West.

Up to five inches of snow blanketed many upland areas of Dumfries and Galloway but snowploughs and gritters managed to keep roads open.

A spokesman at Dumfries HQ said: "As a result of overnight snow fall and subsequent sub zero temperatures in Dumfries and Galloway, travel conditions on the regions road networks remain hazardous.

"We are requesting that drivers exercise extra caution when driving on the regions roads, slow down and allow extra time for their journey.

"We are urging everyone to drive safely and according to the inclement weather conditions."
