Three women charged over late-night horror car smash

POLICE have charged three women in relation to a car crash which sparked a major emergency response.

The Fiat Punto they were travelling in came off Gilmerton Station Road at about 11:30pm on Sunday, before coming to a stop 30 metres into a field.

Five people – three women and two men – were taken to hospital after firefighters cut free one man who was trapped in the car.

The three women were found by emergency workers having been thrown from the vehicle.

Eight ambulances were used at the scene and to rush the casualties to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, with all suffering serious but not life-threatening injuries.

A 26-year-old woman has been charged with a number of offences, including dangerous driving and driving without a licence. The two other women, aged 27 and 25, have been charged with failing to provide information.

All three are scheduled to appear in court at a later date. Police are appealing for witnesses.
