Three-point plan to forge better US ties

SCOTTISH ministers marked American independence day yesterday with the publication of a new plan to refresh economic and social ties.

Its three objectives include a "sharper focus" on economic growth, better conditions for investment and an aim to "manage" the country's "global identity". The move was welcomed by US congressman Mike McIntyre, co-chairman of the Friends of Scotland Caucus in the House of Representatives. He said: "Scotland's friendship remains important to America, and this new plan lays out objectives that stand to be mutually beneficial."

The US is Scotland's single largest overseas market for exports, worth 3.1 billion in 2008, the government said. The States also sends more visitors to Scotland than any other overseas country, with 340,000 trips in 2008 worth about 260 million.

US consul principal officer Dana Linnet said: "Scotland remains a strong friend and partner to the United States. The plan seeks to further strengthen our strong ancestral, historical, cultural and commercial ties in ways that will benefit our friendship and co-operation in years to come."
