The accident involved a southbound Volvo S80 which crossed the carriageway and collided with a Renault Clio and Vauxhall Astra driving in the opposite direction.

The northbound Renault Clio then crossed the carriageway and collided with a southbound Ford Fiesta.

A 73-year-old man and 66-year-old woman in the Vauxhall Astra and the driver of the Volvo S80 were pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver of the Renault Clio was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where her condition was described as serious but stable, while the driver of the Ford Fiesta, a 28-year-old man, was uninjured.

Tayside Police appealed for information about the collision.

The A9 was closed in both directions to allow crash investigators to examine the scene and local diversions were put in place.
