Thousands apply for 200 apprenticeships

Almost 8,000 applicants are chasing 200 places on Network Rail's apprentice scheme, twice as many as last year.

The rail firm said there had been a "massive shift" in the age profile of applicants, with more older people applying for an apprenticeship. Women still make up about 5 per cent of the intake, although this is twice the national average.
