When they returned at midday, they discovered a thief had broken into their property, and the jewellery had been stolen.

The suspect is described as being white, in his early to mid 20s, 5ft 10in tall, of slim build with a gaunt face and short dark brown hair.

He was wearing a yellow 'workman' jacket with blue jeans.

A police spokesperson said: "It would seem this man is an opportunist who is approaching properties on the pretence of looking for work.

"We are encouraging everyone to stay vigilant to this kind of crime, and report any concern over any suspicious activity in your street.

"We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen this man in the street, or who may recognise the description of the suspect."
