Theatre company plans return to Princes Street Gardens

A VETERAN Fringe promoter has vowed to return to Princes Street Gardens this summer if a big-name backer can be found.

Assembly Theatre is planning to run shows in both Princes Street Gardens and George Square despite losing its site on George Street.

However, the company is still looking for a major sponsor to help cover the 500,000 cost of creating the arena below Edinburgh Castle.

Last week it emerged that Assembly was taking over the site of the former Spiegelgarden in George Square Gardens, which is run by Edinburgh University. At least three temporary venues will be set up there in August.

William Burdett Couttssaid: "We definitely want to go back to Princes Street Gardens again after putting so much work in last year to get it off the ground, but we will need a major sponsor to make it all stack up."
