The Pope in Scotland: Prince Philip leaves his traditional mark on event

THE Duke of Edinburgh left his own mark on the Papal visit yesterday by asking Scots Tory leader Annabel Goldie, below, if she was wearing tartan knickers.

The exchange took place as dignitaries mingled during the Pope's visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Noting the St Ninian's tartan tie sported by Labour leader Iain Gray, Prince Philip turned to Miss Goldie and asked: "Have you got a pair of knickers made of this?"

Miss Goldie replied: "I couldn't possibly comment - and even if I did, I couldn't possibly exhibit them."

Later she added: "It's marvellous to know humour is alive and well in the Royal Family."
