The Phoenix has gone up in flames ..

FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a blaze at a city pub after its roof set alight.

About 16 firefighters and five vehicles attended the incident at 1:45pm yesterday at the Phoenix Bar, on Broughton Street.

Cutting equipment had to be used to take off parts of the roof so firefighters could prevent the flames from spreading.

It is believed that there was extensive smoke damage and damage to the roof.

It did not spread to the main bar area.

There were no casualties in the incident.
