Television appeal prompts new leads in hunt for disco teenager's killer

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of a teenager 25 years ago have said their fresh appeal for information has had an "excellent response".

Elaine Doyle was killed on her way home from a disco in Greenock, Inverclyde, on Sunday 1 June, 1986.

The 16-year-old's partially clothed body was found the next day in a lane off Ardgowan Street, less than 50 yards from her home.

She had been strangled and sexually assaulted.

On Tuesday night, a reconstruction of her last movements was broadcast on BBC1's Crimewatch programme.

Strathclyde Police said they have had around 50 calls and that new names and details were provided. Two different people gave the same name. Yesterday detective inspector John Dearie who is leading the investigation, Operation Evergreen, said: "We have had an excellent response from the public to last night's appeal and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who contacted the show.

"These calls have produced new lines of inquiry for the Evergreen team and we will now be following these up. We also received calls from the public at Greenock police office and were contacted via e-mail.

"We are however still looking for more information and more names."
