A TEENAGER has been arrested after allegedly stealing a scooter and driving it while disqualified from the roads.

The 18-year-old was charged with vehicle theft and road traffic offences - including driving with no insurance and driving while disqualified - after the Honda scooter was snatched outside an address in Polwarth Crescent on May 21.

Officers working on Operation RAC, a police drive to target housebreakers and car criminals across the city, managed to track down the suspect using CCTV analysis and other lines of enquiry. The man will appear in court at a later date.

Chief Superintendent Mark Williams, Divisional Commander for Edinburgh, said: “We are targeting housebreakers and car criminals every day and this week Operation RAC officers have had great help from the Air Support Unit.

“Not only does the use of the helicopter provide a visual deterrent against crime, it helps us safely pursue criminals driving at high speeds and gather evidence on film of their activities.

“It’s a great resource to have at our disposal and highlights the benefit of using national assets to assist local policing.

“Housebreaking is my top priority in Edinburgh and the public can help us by making it tough for criminals.
