Teenager detained for bottle attack

A 19-YEAR-OLD youth who hit another teenager on the face with a bottle, cracking his eye socket, has been sent to detention for 12 months.

Mark Sutherland, described as a prisoner at Polmont, had admitted previously at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to the attack in Edenhall Road, Musselburgh, on April 2 this year, and to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner to two other teenage males.

Sentence had been deferred until yesterday for reports.

Sheriff Alistair Noble told Sutherland that it was rather unusual that the writer of the background report said there would be difficulties with any non-custodial disposal of the case.

The Sheriff added that this was the third time Sutherland had been convicted of assault to severe injury.

He ordered he be detained for 12 months on the assault charge and two months for breach of the peace.
