McCreadie, of Kilmarnock, made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody for further investigation.

Jon, a pupil at Kilmarnock Academy, was taken to hospital following the incident, but died of his injuries yesterday.

Officers from Strathclyde Police were called to Kilmarnock town centre after reports of an incident close to a cinema and retail park in Queen’s Drive at 2:40am on Sunday.

The teenager, who lived with his mother just over a mile away in Gateside Place, was found seriously injured outside the Odeon cinema.

Neighbours said the boy’s family were devastated by his death.

One member of Jon’s family, who did not wish to be named, said: “We are all distraught, as this has come out of the blue.

“Jon was a quiet boy and he spent most of his time at home playing his Xbox.

“We are devastated at what has happened.

“I don’t know what he was doing out at that time of night.”

Gillian Cochrane, a neighbour, described Jon’s death as a “tragedy”. She added: “His family are devastated.”

Myra McClay, 70, who lived near Jon’s family in the Shortlees council scheme, described the death as “shocking” and said she had never experienced such an event in the area.

“The family moved in a few months ago and I used to see the wee boy walk past here,” said Ms McClay.

“When I saw people hugging each other outside in the street I knew something terrible must have happened, then I just heard he died.

“It’s terrible,” she said. “You wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

School officials expressed their “sincerest condolences” and said that counselling would be offered to Jon’s classmates if required.

John McGhee, East Ayrshire councillor, said: “It is very sad to hear the young boy has died. I am the father to a 12-year-old boy,and to hear a young person only a year older than him has died is a real tragedy.”

Cathie Jamieson, the Scottish Labour MP for Kilmarnock, said: “This is such a tragic waste of a young life.

“My thoughts are with the family of the victim and members of the Kilmarnock community, who are as shocked as I am that such a terrible incident could take place on the town’s streets.”
