The force said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the shooting.

It is understood that the 16-year-old is a schoolgirl, and the man a trainee gamekeeper.

In a statement, Grampian Police said: "Investigations are at an early stage but we would like to take this opportunity to reassure the local community that we are not looking for any third party in connection with this incident.

"The A939 is closed between the ski gates at Tomintoul and Corgarff has been closed in order to allow investigations to take place. It is expected that the road will remain closed for some time."

The teenagers are not understood to have been related.

Police did not comment on whether they are treating the shooting as a domestic incident.

A large area is said to have been cordoned off around the property as the incident was not confined to the house.

The remote region is the gateway to the Highlands and is home to the Lecht Ski Centre which lies on the A939 route.

Local councillor Fiona Murdoch said: "It seems like a terrible tragedy.

"For two young people to have died is absolutely horrendous, whatever the circumstances may be."

Ms Murdoch, an independent who represents the Speyside Glenlivet ward, said police informed her about the incident.
