Teenage fisherman remains missing

A TEENAGE fisherman who was lost at sea after his vessel collided with a North Sea passenger ferry, has still not been found.

The coastguard last night confirmed Daniel McNeil, 16, from Tynemouth on Tyneside was still missing after his boat and Norfolkline's Scottish Viking ferry crashed.

His 20-year-old brother, who had been skippering the vessel, which was called the Homeland, was rescued from the water by another vessel after the incident last Thursday.

A search for the teenager was called off after a flotilla of local vessels joined a day and night search.

An official investigation into the accident, which took place five miles off Berwickshire, has been instigated.

Police last night said there had been no developments on the case. Norfolkline's parent company DFDS Seaways, which ran the ferry, has said it is "deeply concerned".

The Homeland was based in North Shields, Tyneside,

Four lifeboat crews and up to 20 fishing vessels spent yesterday scanning the area for the missing fisherman.

The coastguard said it would keep a look-out despite the survivability period for someone in the water having passed.
