Police Scotland officers issued an urgent appeal for the public to remain indoors, particularly around the Fogralea, Nederdale, Murrayston and South Road areas of Lerwick.

The teenager was arrested in the Murraystone area of Lerwick around four hours later.

One commuter caught up in the traffic said the area was “completely clogged”.

It is understood firearms officers were flown to Shetland by helicopter to help the local force deal with the incident.

An eye-witness said there were vans of police dogs and a big van with officers wearing helmets and bullet-proof vests.

The teenager was arrested in the Murraystone area of Lerwick around four hours later.

Police Scotland confirmed a man had been arrested and was in custody.

A spokesman said: “No one was injured and enquiries are continuing into the incident.”
