Tears of teenager who saw 'car-surf' pal die

A TEENAGER wept as he told a court he watched a pal die after being thrown from the bonnet of a car, becoming Scotland's first victim of "car-surfing".

Chris Findlay, 17, performed the stunt on the tiny Orkney island of Stronsay.

Lee Caithness, 19, said they and other friends had been drinking in the run-up to the tragedy.

And he revealed that driver Matthew Duffy, who was 17 at the time, had not passed his driving test, but this, he told a High Court jury in Inverness, was legal on the island.

Mr Caithness said Chris had "climbed on to the bonnet" of Duffy's vehicle, adding:

"He was lying face down on the bonnet. The car set off. I was worried. It was like a normal set-off and there was acceleration."

He told the jury: "The car came to a halt and Chris left the bonnet and hit the ground."

Duffy, 19, of Holland Farm, Stronsay, denies causing death by dangerous driving.
