Teacher suspended over 'porn discussion'

A LONG-serving history teacher has been suspended after allegedly discussing internet pornography with a pupil.

David McGhee, head of history at Kincorth Academy in Aberdeen, was also alleged to have made inappropriate comments to pupils on two other occasions.

It emerged yesterday that the 44-year-old has been suspended since March.

Mr McGhee yesterday refused to answer any questions about the alleged incidents.

He was originally charged by police over the allegations but prosecutors confirmed the case against him had been dropped following an investigation.

A Grampian Police spokesman said: "A 44-year-old man was reported to the procurator-iscal in connection with three breaches of the peace at Kincorth Academy between 1 January 2008 and 4 March 2010."

Mr McGhee had been due to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on 20 April, but legal officials later decided to drop the case against him.

A spokeswoman for the procurator-fiscal at Aberdeen said: "After careful consideration it was decided that no further action would be taken."

However, Mr McGhee remains suspended after more than seven months.

The incidents and the teacher's conduct are still the subject of an investigation by Aberdeen City Council education bosses.

In one of the alleged incidents involving Mr McGhee, it was claimed the teacher made remarks to a pupil about internet porn. He was alleged to have made other comments, deemed to be inappropriate, to pupils on two other occasions.

It was understood he was suspended around March this year.

An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said the authority was following standard procedures in relation to the case.

She added: "(The council] is applying its internal processes and procedures and it would be inappropriate to comment further on this internal staffing matter."

A spokesman for the General Teaching Council for Scotland said they would only investigate the incident once council bosses had finished their enquiries.

The spokesman added: "We wouldn't look into a case until a council has finished its investigations and come to a decision as to whether it is reinstating or sacking a teacher.

"By law they are then required to let us know what they have done, whether they have taken action."

Mr McGhee - a University of Aberdeen graduate - has been teaching history at the school for almost 20 years.

He became a member of the Scottish Association of Teachers of History in 1990 and has been treasurer since 2004.

It is not the first time a teacher has been suspended from Kincorth Academy. Principal music teacher John Forrester, 43, hit the headlines after he set up home up with former pupil Claire Bennett in 2006.He quit his post and Miss Bennett later gave birth to their child.

Officials held a major public inquiry into the relationship and later ruled that neither the council nor the school was to blame for the affair.

Mr Forrester was later banned from teaching for life.
