Tax probe after nuns robbed

SPANISH police have launched a tax evasion investigation after nuns reported that several hundred thousand euros had been stolen from their convent.

The money was stored in a cupboard at the convent in the north-eastern city of Zaragoza.

A police official said nuns initially reported €1.5 million (1.3m) was stolen on 28 February, a figure they then lowered to €400,000.

But a lawyer hired by the nuns, said the amount stolen was in fact just over €400,000, and this is what they had reported from the outset. He said the money came from bookbinding and restoration work the nuns did - and paid taxes on.
