Swerving driver was more than twice limit

A YOUNG mum veered all over the road when she drove her car after a drunken spat with her boyfriend, a court heard.

Alana Duffy, 22, was spotted swerving her car from one side of the carriageway to the other.

She was stopped by police and failed a breath test.

Her breath alcohol count was 81 microgrammes – more than double the legal limit of 35mg per 100millitres of breath – Livingston Sheriff Court heard yesterday. Duffy, of Westcraigs Park, Bathgate, West Lothian, admitted drink-driving in Livingston on 1 May.

Depute procurator fiscal Julia McLaren said a patrol saw Duffy's car swerving on Alderstone Road at 1:30am.

Solicitor Stuart Peebles said the loss of her driving licence would be tough on Duffy.

He told the court: "She drives her son to nursery and travels to work in Livingston, so losing her licence is going to cause her considerable difficulties."

On the night of the offence, he said, Duffy had driven her car to her boyfriend's home in Livingston intent on leaving it there, but drove off after a row.

Sheriff Graeme Fleming QC fined her 300, and disqualified her for 20 months.

He also ordered her to take a drink-drive rehab course to reduce her ban to 15 months, if successfully completed.
